InterCommunity: On The Internet For The Internet
Celebrating 25 years Internet, Hall of Fame Ceremony from LA, US
25 000 people, 56 chapters on five continents are celebrating the 25th Anniversary of The Internet, said Kathy Brown, CEO, and President of The Internet Society.
The celebration started with the launch of the Global Internet Report with a discussion panel streamed live online and conversations going around the 56 chapters across the globe for 24 hours.
The center in Brussels is keeping the communication channels open and there is a group of visual translators who are going to report about the celebration. On a special roundtable back in LA The Internet Society will make a summary from all what has been going on during the Celebration of The Internet.
I’ve downloaded the Global report to check the advantages and concerns users share for the preceding 12 months of research internationally.

It was 3 am in my time zone when the Hall of Frame broadcast started.
The Historic Celebration took place in Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, known to have been the place to send the first message to the appnet, before the internet existed.
Many of the current issues of The Internet have been addressed during the events, to mention the speed and price of bandwidth, digital skills, digital divide, online support and new occupations. Check the stream on Twitter with #ShapeTomorrow hashtag.
This event gathered great thinkers and achievers and it’s amazing that thanks to Internet Society organizers we can attend online either watch the replay. From engineers to connectors, each awarded Speaker is a legend and extraordinary example for us to follow!

It’s amazing to get to know the author of the first bestseller The Internet Companion and The User’s Directory of Computer Networks Peggy K ! I’m so impressed with the opportunity to listen to all awarded Achievers!
Thinking about TC help 25 years later, users have personalized support plus all the Help Central answers on every step of what they do or intend to do. Is this a better situation for The Internet or is it the wrong way to go and return back to one-way information and regulations? Thinking out loud, Peggy:)

Nina Trankova I think the way that product help forums work now – both for Google and other products – is a natural evolution from the old user-to-user communities.
You can see this if you go to Google Groups, which has archived the old Usernet Newsgroups. I checked and one of my oldest archived newsgroup posts was a computer-related question that I posted in 1995 (which was, shockingly, 22 years ago).
The difference was that this didn’t offer official support, but rather it was a place to go for peer support. And by the mid-90s AOL had volunteers moderating discussions and answering questions too.
Usenet newsgroups and private AOL communities turned into help forums by the mid-2000s. But still then (and now) the focus is peer support.
But I think we’re moving away from that now. As social media has developed, I think we are seeing more and more people who want to communicate directly with companies (which you see increasingly on Twitter, for example).
The problem is that doesn’t scale. If there are billions of users, direct 1:1 support for everyone isn’t possible. So it will be interesting to see what happens.
Nina Trankova says
Peggy K yes it is shocking! Achievers are so young yet they are mentioning events from 30 years ago! Good memories from newsgroups, Peggy!
When I think about 1:1 interactive communication, it’s a pretty new thing globally in the aspect of including all occupations, not just computer science, IT or media. I think it needs more time.
Peer to peer support corresponds to the message from the Celebration of The Internet #ShapeTomorrow: human-centric Internet of the future.

Peggy K I’m obstinate to continue thinking out loud and I want to address scale. If back then just a small layer touched base on innovation, it’s including almost every working place now. For this, Help Community and TC-s should have huge support, correct?
Peggy K says
Nina Trankova I would think so, but I don’t know what might be happening behind the scenes at the company. Maybe there are other factors we don’t see?
