Internet Governance – Why the Multistakeholder Approach Works
2018 may be the most significant year in terms of Internet governance since the dawn of the Internet!
First messages from State of The Net 2018 My Notes
I have taken a few notes while attending online State of the Net 2018 Conference. Below is my short list.
Two regulatory issues at high level noted at the opening of the Conference:
– To not fall into false data economies. Security and privacy online can happen without data localization.
– Not centralized top-down, but bottom-up governance with engineers’ leadership.
*The multistakeholder approach* is a toolbox, not a single solution
Many people talk about ‘the multistakeholder model’ as if it is a single solution. But in reality, there is no single model that works everywhere or for every issue. Instead, the multistakeholder approach is a set of tools or practices that all share one basis:
“Individuals and organizations from different realms participating alongside each other to share ideas or develop consensus policy.” end of quote from the article By Sally Shipman Wentworth, Vice President of Global Policy Development: The State of the Net Today – Why we must Act now for its Future |Internet Society.
