Domain Names
Generic Top Level Domains. Internationalised domains are an innovation now. gTLDS policy domain names use natural language and for this reason, they overlap with trademark protection. A working group is set up and is in fact-finding mode. Questionaries are ready and information about URL-s is going to be collected.
Government Advisory Committee
Advice: to maintain “whois” base to the greatest extent.
The number of governments that understand what ICANN is doing is increasing. The country codes are decided by the International Standard organization and then go to ICANN
GDPR
ICANN has gathered all use cases, educated EU and is committed to complying with GDPR to the greatest extent possible. There is still a debate about access by accreditation to “Whois”. Complicating factors are the distributions of registry and registrars under contracts. GDPR raised unintended issues about the fragmentation of the Internet. ICANN is against the Internet change to a less open Internet.
