It is easier to move rivers and mountains than to change a person’s basic nature.

I will extend the question … How to improve self-discipline ? Why new years eve resolutions fail so often?

Well at least for me inspirational quotes does not have too much effect, I guess I really prefer a more scientific approach such as positive reinforcement from behaviourism …

I don’t think many people are more self-disciplined now than at any other time. In fact I would suggest our self-discipline is in decline. We see a President tweeting online, at a whim decimating share prices of big brands he dislikes. We see the Left and Right political parties in the UK at each others throats because there is no reasonable discourse. We see religious groups going to ever more dangerous extremes in order to get what they want…

Maybe the real question should be “Are we losing our self-discipline and control?”

Andre Amorim That proverb is very much tied to what I believe: I don’t really change! I only learn about not repeating the same mistakes and accepting the following of my imperfections while focused on what I’m talented to do. I find experiential learning the best self-discipline reinforcement, to use your wording.

I have a really funny story about me getting into a self-disciplined habit while driving. I’m too sensitive to politics Nergling

One morning I was listening to the debate in parliament while driving to work. They were broadcasting live. The speakers were more impudent than ever ( or I thought so). This affected me so much that I turned on the left even if the light was red and a cop was standing straight in front of my front window. He was shocked by what I did, (thank God there was zero traffic at 8 am that day) and asked me what’s wrong. I was quickly recovering by e. being “in the parliament” in my imagination and explained to him that I was angry while listening to the radio broadcast. He said: “Why don’t you stop the radio then and don’t ever listen to the news while driving?”. I tried it immediately and for more than 10 years it’s still my habit that I’m happy with. To me driving means I want to reach a place, it’s not about listening to news:) Plus space is free for a nice talk.

I think that observing lack of self-discipline is deluding us Nergling. No, we are not losing self-discipline. There are spammers who come to G+Help and ask why Google suspended their account when some other users did more spam:) Fellow TC-s reply that others behaviour is not an excuse for bad choices.

Andre Amorim I don’t have time to smile youtube.com – NOT WHILE I’M DRIVING!

Nina Trankova so rather than lack of self-discipline we care less about the effects of our actions, i.e. we are doing these things on purpose and in a calculated way? Interesting! Also a wise move to not listen to the news when driving haha!

Nergling exactly! We have augmented “being different” into a model of copy-paste demonstration.

Until we straighten the self-discipline for previous effects of actions we tend to add new “careless actions”. Isn’t it better if we include unconscious choices in self-discipline as well? Like the video-replies, we exchanged above;) Or like sleeping for 12 hours once in a year.

Glad you like my news-free space! I tend to increase it for other spaces, consciously through self-discipline! For example, we agreed that we are not listening to the news while we have dinner.

Nina Trankova we have no screens on whilst eating policy (TV/phones/ipads) it’s nice! The exception being takeaway pizza once in a while!

Nina Trankova serius now … Discipline reminds me the The Marshmallow experiment. I was thinking about it regards to trading and investment.. for instance, go short and cash out the profit or go long for a higher target ? … in the Mashmallow test the reward rules are know in advance (except the time length) … regards to trading and the market is a bit more complicate because the future reward is uncertain ..

🙂 I know I was a blond baby but I should ask mother if I wasn’t even foxy. For a present test, I wouldn’t take any, no matter what and how long.

Serius, I’ll be expecting interviewer Emil Ivanov to answer after he returns from Ladakh in India at the end of April. I’m sure this was one context of his question and your comment will be a nice surprise since he is underestimating public conversations so far.
